The Human Body: A work of Art

by Rebecca Little on 10/22/11

I wish all of you could see your bodies through my eyes.  I am so privileged to have a license to touch people.  Human bodies are like works of Art.  The more you see and observe, the more appreciation you have.  Bodies come in all versions of beauty...all different, which makes them Art.  Can you imagine if paintings, sculpture, drawings, were all the same?  It is the uniqueness of the subject that makes it special. You are all special to me...and I appreciate you all....like fine art!

Adventure Travel

by Rebecca Little on 08/22/11

As I keep mentioning, travel is definitely a passion of mine.  There is a certain romantic adventure in observing different cultures and getting out of my comfort zone to utilize innate survival skills. Whether it be language, transportation, currency challenges, maps, food choices, lodging options, and usually choosing the path less traveled...I am always amazed how patience, a friendly smile and good attitude can get you almost anywhere or anything.  I do the majority of my travel alone, which some people think is crazy, but just adds to the adventure.  What I realize, however, is that the same kind of travel can be experienced in small groups.  So, to share these experiences with others, my business partner, Carol Brunelli  and I,  recently started a small company called "Peaceful Retreats".  Our goal is to create the same feeling of adventure for people who don't necessarily want to travel solo.  We want to encourage clients to feel totally comfortable coming on our trips either independently or with a friend or partner.  We keep our groups small so there is a feeling of intimacy and friendship but also allow for ample alone and independent time.  Besides adventure, our trips focus on beauty and wellness, two of my other passions.  We take you to off the beaten path places where you will experience magnificent scenery and meet people of great inner and outer beauty.  We nurture this in ourselves through a wellness element included in each trip.  We will always have massage, meditation, and some type of physical activity as elements of the trips.  Food will also be a highlight.  Tasting the local and regional foods of the areas we travel, is a true delight.  We also make it a point to give something back to an area where we have been through some volunteer service or donation.  What all of this amounts too, is a totally "feel good" experience that nurtures the body, mind, and soul.  Which is another one of my favorite passions.....to feel good!

Putting Value on the Things You Love

by Rebecca Little on 08/14/11

How often to we under prioritize or neglect the things we love to do...for things we have to do, or are expected to do?
Most of us spend an enormous amount of time, money and stress concentrating on just a few of our basic human needs:  shelter, food, security.  We work hard to pay the bills to provide these things for ourselves and families.  This is indeed necessary, but there are several other human needs that shouldn't go neglected and help make us who we are and much healthier and happier human beings.  Don't forget to nurture these other needs.  Pay attention to the things that make you happy.  Things you enjoy.  Things that make you feel good, have purpose....and value these things.  Make them a priority in your life.  Sometimes it just means letting go of something that really isn't that important or satisfying to you to free up time, energy, and money to put toward something that is.  Take inventory of what zaps the most out of you physically, mentally, and financially.  Perhaps you don't really require the 500 station cable package on your television, or a new car every couple years, or a new wardrobe every season, or expensive cosmetics, or constantly dining out, or new landscaping...you see what I am getting at?  Then make a list of what really makes you feel good (and if any of the above mentioned things are on that list?  That's O.K, too)  You may come to find, that many of those things don't cost a dime.  For example, Nature.  Spending time in Nature, is absolutely free and intoxicating at the same time.  Spending more time with friends and family is another freebie.  Doing volunteer work.  Sex.  Playing or listening to music. Reading. Dancing. Napping......
And the things that do? We all have these things, too.  In my case, travel for instance.  I have sacrificed some pretty meaningless things in my life to afford to travel the world.  And the satisfaction I receive is priceless.  Or bodywork, another example.  The good health and feeling I receive from massage and other forms of bodywork eliminate my need for other medical care or prescription medicine.  I still pay a monthly insurance premium, but I can afford a lesser policy.  I put the dollars I save, toward these better, preventative healthcare options that actually are enjoyable!  Or really good food....I usually spend a little more on something of better quality or nutritional value and just buy less!  It is a much better option.  You can get an awful lot of satisfaction and delight from just a little bit of something you really, really want and tastes amazing.  I could go on forever, but hopefully you get my point.  Put value on the things you love and enjoy!  And most of all, don't feel guilty about it....everyone deserves to feel good...the most important, basic human need.  Check this link out if you would like to know more about human needs.

Move those hips..

by Rebecca Little on 08/04/11

Obviously, my blogging skills must improve....life just gets busy sometimes, as we all well know.  It is a season for biking, hiking, running, walking, etc...all things that keep the body in a "forward" state of motion.  And when we aren't doing these leisure activities, most of us are working in front of a computer a fair amount of time...unintentionally slouching "forward" and our hips are locked into a seated position for hours. My wellness tip for summer....and year round...is to keep you hips and abdomen moving.  Great, fun ways to do this is by dancing and doing yoga in combination with your other sports.  Cross train.  And you don't have to hit the clubs to dance or have a partner.  Try something like Zumba®.  My partner in my travel business, Carol Brunelli, is a Zumba® instructor in Boulder.  If she can get me to dance, anyone can.  Or dance at home....or roll your hips daily on an exercise ball, belly dance, stomach roll, even rub your belly....get your body moving in every direction you can think of.  This promotes fluidity in the muscles and joints, not to mention is good for all of the organs in the abdominal area.  Plus, you will feel better.  Happier, freer.  Our hips, diaphragm, abdomen, are classic places where the body stores tension.  Many people are unaware of this.  As far as yoga goes, it's amazing.  You are moving your body is so many different positions and holding these positions, opening the body on so many levels.  Do simple yoga stretches at home if you don't have time for a class.  It all helps.   Most important, just do something you enjoy and is fun.  It will keep you interested and you will reap the health benefits.  Life is about motion....we don't ever want to be stuck....anywhere!

Sleep Problems? Massage Helps

by Rebecca Little on 04/02/11

I hear so many people lately complaining of not sleeping well.  Even I, who usually sleeps like a rock, have had a bit of trouble adjusting to daylight savings time.  This will happen to me in the Fall and Spring.  It is amazing to me how doctors will so willingly prescribe sleep aids, which taken for too long will disrupt the chance of having normal sleep patterns.  I, for months was taking Melatonin, a natural sleep aid, and came to find out that with prolonged use, really isn't that good for you.  I was afraid to stop taking it because I was sleeping so well.  After a few days of stopping, and paying attention to my lifestyle (which includes regular massage) I was back to sleeping better than ever.  Read this article from massagemag.com to see part of the reason why:

Slee p, Immunity, Digestion, and Quality of Life

Therapeutic touch is an instinctive and eloquent form of communication that has been molded into a healing art. Larry Costa, author of Massage: Mind and Body, writes that massage has many "physical and mental benefits, including ... relieving muscle soreness, increasing flexibility, easing chronic pain, reducing tension headaches, boosting the immune system, promoting restful sleep, and improving concentration." Massage positively affects the body's circulatory, nervous, and immune systems. By encouraging blood flow through the veins, massage benefits the entire body. The calming effects of massage on the nervous system often produce a sense of serenity and well-being. Regular massage also stimulates the lymphatic system, which enhances the function of the immune system.

From easing arthritis and asthma to improving digestion, the benefits of massage therapy run the gamut. Massage helps relieve daily stressors and eases recovery from many serious illnesses. In The Complete Book of Relaxation Techniques, Jenny Sutcliffe points out that massage can relieve pain by stimulating the production of endorphins--the body's own painkillers--and, by increasing the sensory input to the brain, thereby blocking out the pain messages.

The positive physiological and psychological effects of massage were demonstrated in a recent study of patients undergoing care for cancer. When given massage, study participants at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston exhibited increased relaxation, better sleep, and improved immune function, along with relief from fatigue, pain, anxiety, and nausea.

In Ayurvedic Herbal Massage, author Gita Ramesh says regular massages can "relieve stress and help to promote a long and healthy life." In the Indian healing system of ayurveda, massage is considered a form of whole body exercise that increases stamina and energy, while simultaneously delivering an inexpressible quality of stillness and joy--a time to be present. Massage realigns the entire body, promotes deeper and more natural breathing patterns, and helps restore individual resources of vital energy. The moments spent in massage are an opportunity to experience oneself as completely accepted.

Regular massage is a gift to yourself. Through the power of structured, healing touch, massage helps the body run smoothly, like keeping a musical instrument in perfect tune. Massage rejuvenates the body from the outside in, with side benefits that include improved complexion, better posture, and a relaxed disposition on life.

The Death of a Friend, the Birth of an Angel

by Rebecca Little on 07/19/10

Today a good friend and client of mine, Deandra Trevino, lost a long, hard fought battle with Ovarian Cancer.

I met Deandra in her Boulder hair salon, West End Salon, about 2 years ago.  I had experienced the classic "bad hair nightmare" from a cocky, new stylist in her salon and without any complaint on my part, Deandra called me the next day, told me she fired the stylist and offered to make things right.  I had never even met the woman and she was so caring and thoughtful.  An expert in customer service.  I went in the next week and was blessed with a new friendship.
I had just read an article on this young, beautiful, savy businesswoman in the Daily Camera, and it told of her recent diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer at age 27.  She was experiencing ongoing chemotherapy treatments and after a year or more, was beating the odds.  You would have never guessed this hardworking, adorable, sassy, positive-attitude hair dresser and business owner was fighting for her life behind it all.   Because of her generosity and thoughtfulness, I came to my appointment armed with a massage gift certificate and a nice tip.  We hit it off immediately and I asked her if she liked, and could have massage?  She was delighted and said her doctors highly recommended it.  We scheduled her appointment for the next week.....and for two week intervals for over a year.  We had a wonderful trade going....she whipped my hair back into shape after disaster and I had the beautiful experience of giving back to her in a way that will forever impact my life.  They were probably the most meaningful massage sessions I have ever experienced.  To have the opportunity to give someone unconditional love, relief and nurturing care, who on a regular basis was poked and prodded with needles and devices and subjected to invasive surgeries and treatments, was a true honor.  In the months we worked together, for so long her external body never showed the signs of what was going on inside.  She was young, beautiful and strong.....and not much older than my own daughter who I thought of every time we were together.  How could this be happening?
I was able to witness the highs and lows and her constant ability to overcome obstacles.  Most of the time we were together the cancer was under control and even improving.
Unfortunately, the last massage session I was able to give Deandra was just after New Years 2010.  She was feeling better after a rough spell over the holidays but got to go to New York with her husband of 8 months to ring in the New Year.  She was so happy.  I was scheduled to leave the country for Australia at the end of January for 3 months and felt so much better leaving, seeing her this way.  She was my only regret of being away from Boulder so long.  When I was away and sick with a respiratory infection myself, I was so encouraged by a personal email and Carepages Update I had read from Deandra regarding a positive upswing in her health, that I quit my complaining and got better! She was constantly inspiring me.  A true beacon of light and strength.
Unfortunately, upon my return to the states in late April, Deandra's heath had taken a turn for the worst.  We were never able to make the massages we attempted to schedule due to her failing health and busy schedule opening a new hair salon (she never gave up!).  In her final days and weeks, I have no doubt Deandra was surrounded by a force of love so powerful from friends and family.  She was loved deeply and had such a positive affect on the lives of many.  She will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to her husband, mother, father, and siblings. Thank you for sharing your beautiful angel with the rest of us.  She will never be forgotten and has taught me to live every moment of life to its fullest.  May you rest in peace, Deandra.  I love you.

Get Outside!

by Rebecca Little on 06/07/10

I can still hear my mother saying "get outside" to my sisters and I, and probably some of the best advice she could have ever given us.  I am sure that is why I am such an outdoorsy gal.  We are so blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world I hope all of you will take at least 30 minutes of your day (more if possible) to be outdoors.  Leave the ipod at home and soak up the sounds of nature, listen to your own thoughts, smell the smells of summer, let your eyes take in the beauty of the mountains, taste anything grown locally, and everytime you are rubbing on that sunscreen or oil....touch yourself and be grateful you are here right now.  Feel the world around you.  Have a great week and "get outside".

Stress and Aging

by Rebecca Little on 05/16/10

Good Sunday Morning,
I noticed an article in the news today that confirmed my long held belief that stress causes premature aging.  I decided to find just a couple of websites (and there are many) confirming this belief to pass on to you:
http://www.lovinghealinghands.com/9/27/Stress_and_Aging.html
http://www.ahealthyme.com/topic/stressaging
Please everyone...take a look at your lives and try to remove the toxic, stressful elements of it.  Sometimes this is easier said than done.  Which is where the importance of massage comes in.  Stress can be a fact of life.  Especially if your job requires a certain amount of stress.  Family life can be stressful.  Neither of which you can just "quit" tomorrow.  Instead schedule a massage now and then.  Massage forces (in a delightful way) you to take that time to chill-out and relax.  For 1-2 hours you do nothing but lay on a comfortable table in a peaceful, tranquil environment and let someone else flush the stress from you body.  The para-sympathetic nervous system takes over and your body begins the renewal process.
Start reversing the aging process today....book a massage!

Just a thought...

Dreaming of Breakfast

by Rebecca Little on 05/06/10

When I was at the Ayurvedic retreat in Bali, they prescribed that I eat a lighter, earlier dinner....which is difficult for someone who used to own a dinner house restaurant and has raised a family on the pretense that dinner is the most important meal.....but I have tried changing my ways, and it is actually working to my benefit.  I sleep better, digest better, and I am hungry in the morning!  I used to often skip breakfast but now I am excited for it and it really does set me up for a better day.  Here is my latest obsession for breakfast, because mango's are in season...Really healthy, really tasty, really warm, and really easy!

Steel Cut Oats  prepared with water and a spash of apple juice if you have it

the oats take awhile...but just before they are finished I have been adding some fresh mango chunks, banana slices, and some shredded coconut (the unsweetened kind).  With a little milk and honey if needed, you have a tropical treat.  I skip dessert and dream about the next morning's breakfast....Yum.

Spring Rejuvenation Special

by Rebecca Little on 05/03/10

After receiving a great massage on Friday and giving some sessions this weekend, I was inspired hiking up Mt. Sanitas to run a "Spring Rejuvenation" special.  As many of you know, I have been in Australia with a stop in Bali for the past 3 months.  Having suffered a respiratory infection (maybe it was SARS!) early on in the trip and working with my daughter in a chilly air-conditioned office every day, I was not in top form.  Even massage wasn't sounding good during that time, so I knew it was a desperate situation!  When I finally was feeling up for a massage and started giving massage again to clients in Australia, every thing about my life improved.  I went to Bali and took a massage course along with spending some time at an Ayurvedic health retreat and received a lot of interesting body work and massage.  I came home to Colorado totally rejuvenated and really wanting to take care of myself.  A great feeling to have and a great way to start this fun time of year.  So get out of the winter doldrums and book a massage today.  Your body will love you for it!

Let's clear up the name thing...

by Rebecca Little on 05/02/10

Just for clarity, my given name is Rebecca Ann.  1/2 of the people in the universe call me "Becky".  The other 1/2 call me "Rebecca". And there are other variations.  Bec, Beccs, Rebequita, Beckster.  I kind of like the versitality of my name and will always answer to both.  I honestly have no preference, which adds to the confusion and why I am telling you this.  Pick what you like...or come up with your own variation...it may become my favorite!
